McGee, Charles

(Born 1924)

Born in South Carolina, Charles McGee moved to Detroit at ten years of age. His art training began after serving in World War 2. He was given tuition to attend the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts now known as the Center For Creative Studies. McGee's paintings, assemblages, and sculptures are held in are on permanent display at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. He is the dean of African American artists in Michigan and has received many awards.
